Jo Spier (1900 – 1978) was a popular Dutch artist who worked for the newspaper De Telegraaf in the 1930s. He created humorous illustrations and cartoons about everyday life. Spier’s style shows the influence developed by American magazines. It is characterised by the use of fine yet sharply drawn lines, great precision, a radical economy and an impression of ease and a distinct lightness of tone.
