Kamisaka Sekka (1866-1942) was born in Kyoto to a Samurai family. His talents for art and design were recognised early. He eventually allied himself with the traditional Rimpa school of art however as traditional Japanese styles became unfashionable, Japan infused tradition with modernism. In 1910, Sekka was sent to Glasgow where he was heavily influenced by Art Nouveau.
