John William Lewin (1770-1819) was a painter, art teacher and naturalist. He was the son of William Lewin, an ornithologist and fellow of the Linaean Society. Lewin received his early training as a natural history draughtsman from his father and helped extensively with the drawings and engravings of plates for Lewin senior’s The Birds of Great Britain (London 1789–94).

John Lewin emigrated to New South Wales in 1800 because of his passion for natural history and became one of Australia’s first professional naturalists.
